A lamp can be beautiful and still leave you squinting at your book. It can look perfectly proportioned in a photograph, then arrive with a shade that takes over the bedside table. And it can make a room worth staying in after dinner, even when almost nothing else has changed. The difference usually comes down to where the light lands.
Before choosing a shape, choose a job. The lamp beside a reading chair needs to reach the page; the one on a sideboard may simply need to draw the eye into a dark part of the room. A small rechargeable light can make supper feel lovely without being remotely suitable as the only light in a study. Once that distinction is clear, there is much more freedom to choose something with character.
For the chair where you actually read
Start from the seat, with a book open. A lamp that appears close enough from the doorway may still leave the page in shadow once your shoulder is between it and the light. Bring the source towards the work and keep the bright bulb out of your direct line of sight. Adjustable heads earn their keep here, particularly when two people use the same chair.
The table matters as much as the lamp. A broad base can leave nowhere for a cup; a very low table may put a short lamp below the useful height. Measure the arrangement together. The two choices below offer different compromises: a directional metal head, or glass that makes the light itself more visible.

Rarni ribbed-glass lamp
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
Ribbed glass gives a desk-shaped lamp a softer outline. We would place it beside a chair used for conversation as well as a little reading, where the lamp remains in view during the day.
- Best for
- A side table that needs light and some visual interest.
- Watch for
- Glass exposes more of the light source than an opaque shade. Check glare from your seated position; the bulb is bought separately.
- The room
- A bedroom chair, a timber desk or a traditional sitting room.

Nkuku · UK · £250.00
Tubu adjustable desk lamp
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
The adjustable head makes this the useful one: sit it on a table beside a reading chair and aim the light towards the page. The brass can hold its own against dark paint and timber.
- Best for
- A reading chair with a side table, or a writing desk.
- Watch for
- A bulb is not included. Check the reach from your table to the book; an adjustable head cannot compensate for a base that is too far away.
- The room
- A book-lined study or a small sitting room.
For the corner that disappears at six
A dark corner does not always need a brighter bulb. Often it needs a light of its own. Put a shaded floor lamp beside a chair and the furniture begins to read as a place to sit, rather than a shape at the edge of the room. Let some light reach the wall behind it: that lit surface helps the room feel deeper.
Choose the body in relation to the furniture. A fine stem suits a crowded corner. A substantial wooden one can stand up to a deep sofa and tall bookshelves. Neither will cure an awkward position if its cable has to cross the route to the door.

Nkuku · UK · £325.00
Ehadi floor-lamp base
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
The slender stem leaves the room visible behind it. It is a good way to add height beside a low sofa without introducing another substantial piece of furniture.
- Best for
- A corner that needs a shaded pool of ambient light.
- Watch for
- The pictured shade and bulb are not included. Allow for the whole shade diameter, not just the small footprint of the base.
- The room
- A compact living room with low furniture.

Nkuku · UK · £350.00
Digha wood and metal floor-lamp base
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
Dark-stained wood gives this lamp enough weight to sit beside a broad armchair or a deep sofa. Its brass details lift it clear of the furniture without making it feel unrelated.
- Best for
- A large chair or sofa that needs a taller companion.
- Watch for
- Shade and bulb are separate purchases. Its thicker body is less discreet than the Ehadi; leave some clear space around it.
- The room
- A conservatory with proper upholstered furniture, or an earthy sitting room.
For the table beside the sofa
The easiest mistake is buying a table lamp for the table rather than for the person sitting beside it. From the sofa, the shade should conceal the bright source without swallowing the view across the room. Check that you can reach the switch comfortably. Then put your usual glass, book or remote on the table: whatever remains is the space the lamp can take.
If there is no space left, use the floor. A standing lamp can do the same quiet job while keeping the table useful. There is no prize for making every piece of furniture perform three tasks at once.

Nkuku · UK · £365.00
Kara iron floor-lamp base
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
A standing lamp is often the better answer when the side table is already occupied. The aged-bronze finish and branching structure bring a more drawn, angular line to soft furniture.
- Best for
- Light beside a sofa without surrendering the tabletop.
- Watch for
- The shade and bulb cost extra. Check the footprint against your route past the sofa; this is not a wall-hugging fitting.
- The room
- A piano room, library corner or tailored living room.

Nkuku · UK · £140.00
Rasan table-lamp base
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
The folded metal base gives a small table a firm shape without demanding a decorative display around it. We would add a plain fabric shade and let nearby upholstery supply the pattern.
- Best for
- A sofa side table with room for a shade and a drink.
- Watch for
- Shade and bulb are not included. Compare the finished lamp height with the sofa arm before choosing the shade.
- The room
- A relaxed room with linen, aged brass and books.
For a bedside with almost no spare surface
Small bedrooms are unforgiving of over-large shades. Their widest point can project beyond the table, brush a curtain or sit awkwardly close to the pillow. Look at the full outline, not simply the base measurement. A compact glass lamp keeps that outline relatively light, although it asks you to pay more attention to glare.

Nkuku · UK · £120.00
Rizal fluted-glass bedside lamp
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
Fluted glass and a dark metal base make a compact bedside arrangement feel finished. We like it where a heavy fabric shade would crowd the table or obscure a picture above it.
- Best for
- A bedside needing gentle ambient light.
- Watch for
- The glass shade does not hide light like an opaque one. Confirm overall dimensions and bulb requirements with Nkuku, especially if you read in bed.
- The room
- A small bedroom with timber furniture and simple linen.
For long stretches of reading in bed, a small ambient lamp may need a separate reading light. Choose that from your reading position, with the pillows in place, rather than judging it while standing at the foot of the bed.
For the desk that still has work to do

A desk lamp should leave the work surface workable. Place it to the side of the task, ideally opposite your writing hand to reduce the shadow, and test the angle against your screen. A reflected bright patch on a glossy monitor is tiring company. For drawing or paperwork, the ability to move the head is more useful than an elaborate base.
The Tubu in the reading section is our desk choice too. Its adjustable head is a practical reason to repeat a product, rather than finding a second lamp merely to lengthen the list. Check the cable route and socket before deciding which side of the desk it will occupy.

For the sideboard that needs some height
A long cabinet can make small objects look stranded. A substantial lamp gives the arrangement an anchor and lets you keep the rest simple: a low bowl, perhaps, or a picture that sits comfortably behind it. Aim for different heights rather than a row of objects meeting at the same line.
This is where a turned timber base or an irregular metal form is particularly useful. It contributes something when switched off, too. Keep the shade clear of the artwork and check the total depth if the cabinet is in a passage. A lamp can fit on a console while its shade still intrudes into the walk past it.

Nkuku · UK · £175.00
Manua turned-wood lamp base, large
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
The turned mango-wood base has enough presence for a long sideboard. Its dark finish connects with older furniture, while a generous plain shade can keep the combination from becoming ornate.
- Best for
- A console or sideboard that makes a smaller lamp look apologetic.
- Watch for
- This is the large base, not a complete shaded lamp. Include the shade, bulb and their extra height in your plan and budget.
- The room
- A collected dining room with dark wood and framed art.

Nkuku · UK · £135.00
Sakiti cast-metal lamp base
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
The irregular ridges make this a useful foil to a very straight cabinet. Its antiqued finish sits comfortably with old timber, but the outline is strong enough for a simpler contemporary room.
- Best for
- Texture on a sideboard without a crowd of small objects.
- Watch for
- The photograph shows a shade that is not included. Nkuku also excludes the bulb; choose both before comparing the total with a complete lamp.
- The room
- A quiet console, a warm studio or a room with plain joinery.
For the table with no socket nearby
Portable lamps are at their best when they solve a cable problem. On a dining table, a low pool of light can pick out plates and glassware without a lead running towards the nearest wall. On a windowsill, it can make the far end of a room feel occupied. The useful question is how long it will run at the setting you intend to use.
A quoted maximum runtime may refer to the dimmest setting. Ask about the charging arrangement and whether the light can be used while charging; do not assume either. Battery-powered also does not mean weatherproof. If the plan includes the garden, look for the maker’s explicit outdoor suitability and care instructions.

The Roost · UK · £125.00
Mantle portable lamp, stone white
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
A folded, almost architectural shape directs light down onto the surface beneath it. Stone white is an easy companion to coloured glasses and ceramics on a dining table.
- Best for
- An occasional pool of light where a cable would cross the floor.
- Watch for
- Check charge time, runtime at the brightness you need, charging equipment and indoor/outdoor suitability with the retailer. We have not measured its battery life.
- The room
- A dining table, deep windowsill or relaxed supper setting.
For the room that could use a little nerve
Some lamps are there partly because they are wonderful things to look at. That is a perfectly sound reason to buy one, provided another light can handle the reading. A curved brass stem brings movement to straight panelling; a metal sunflower can turn a small cabinet into the most memorable corner of the room.

The Roost · UK · £845.00
Vintage Italian sunflower lamp
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
A painted-metal flower is allowed to be the point of the arrangement. Give it a small cabinet of its own and repeat its yellow once elsewhere; it needs very little company.
- Best for
- A distinctive decorative light on a generous side table.
- Watch for
- An individual vintage piece, 67cm high and 45cm wide. The seller notes wear and a missing screw cap, and says it has been rewired. Inspect the condition photographs and delivery terms.
- The room
- A colourful sitting room with quieter upholstery.

The Roost · UK · £136.00
Winding floor lamp
Price checked 7 October 2026. Confirm with the retailer.
The wriggling stem is a small act of mischief against straight panelling. Its raffia shade and aged-brass finish keep the joke warm rather than novelty-shop loud.
- Best for
- A plain wall or a dining-room corner that needs a different line.
- Watch for
- The listing describes a wrapped raffia shade and a foot switch. Check the shade width and switch position against the furniture around it.
- The room
- A striped dining room, as in our dressed-interiors feature.
Give an expressive lamp some space. Repeating one of its colours elsewhere is enough; matching every object to its personality tends to flatten the effect. The sunflower works beside restrained upholstery because the sofa lets it be eccentric.
See both arrangements in The house is getting dressed again.
Before you order
Measure the lamp as it will be used: base, shade and the space around it. Check whether the listing includes the shade and bulb, which fitting and maximum wattage it accepts, and whether any dimmer is compatible with the bulb you want. For a shaded ambient lamp, warm-white light is a sensible starting point; choose brightness for the job, rather than relying on the word “warm” to tell you how much light you will get.
Read the return and delivery terms before buying a bulky or vintage piece. For older lamps, look closely at condition photographs and the seller’s electrical information. A claim that something has been rewired is useful evidence to inspect, not a substitute for seeing what the seller guarantees.
Then make one change and live with it for an evening. Move the lamp, sit down, open the book and switch the ceiling light off. You will learn more about the next light the room needs from that hour than from another page of attractive lamps.
If the room still feels gloomy, our guide to making a dark room brighter looks at the walls, furniture and daylight as well as the lamps.
