ROOM 44 · Dining Room

The dining room that keeps its ceremony

Published

An imagined period apartment with tall windows, restrained cornicing and a timber floor.

Four people can have a proper dinner without a table for eight. A compact top and shallow serving cabinet leave space for pulled-out chairs in this period apartment.

THE DESIGN

Four places can make a complete dining room. This room gives them a table of the right scale, comfortable chairs and a light that marks where people gather. The period shell supplies some of the character before a single plate is put down.

The 120cm Tribesigns table has a brown wood-effect top and an angular trestle base. Its relatively compact dimensions leave more of the room available around the edges. Four Ukari chairs introduce black leather and thin iron frames, giving the substantial-looking table a lighter surround. The selected table has an engineered wood construction. Confirm the rustic-brown option against the retailer's photographs before ordering.

A small Quinn pendant hangs over the centre. Its hammered brass finish gives the room a warm point of detail against the darker furniture, while the single fitting leaves the ceiling quiet. The original artwork provides a broader area of colour. These two different scales keep the decoration from becoming a row of equally insistent objects.

Along the wall, the Takua sideboard makes a place for serving pieces. At 31cm deep it adds less bulk than a conventional deep cabinet, although its footprint still needs to be allowed for beside pulled-out chairs. Glass doors reveal a few plain white plates and glasses. The Amazon Basics porcelain set is the selected everyday dinnerware; glasses, napkins and artwork are styling elements.

The table does not need to be fully dressed whenever somebody sits down. A plate, a glass and a comfortable position are a good beginning. The room supplies the rest of the occasion.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

The space around four places can be more generous than the space around six.

Colour palette

  • Plaster
  • Brown timber
  • Aged black
  • Antique brass
  • Muted rust
01

The table suits four places

The 120 by 80cm top creates a compact group. Its trestle base gives the room a stronger shape than several little pieces would.

02

The chairs leave air around the table

Ukari's slim iron frames and black leather seats give the brown table a clear edge. Armless chairs keep the four places visually distinct.

03

One pendant marks the centre

The small Quinn pendant concentrates the overhead shape above the table. A hammered brass finish gives it texture without requiring a group of decorative lights.

04

The cabinet keeps service nearby

The shallow Takua sideboard holds plates and glasses within reach. Its grey iron and glass repeat the chairs' darker note along the wall.

05

The room keeps a little ceremony

White plates, simple glasses and an original artwork give the arrangement a sense of attention. The table still has room for food.

WHAT TO BORROW

Set four places before buying a larger table. Check the space left for food, elbows and pulled-out chairs; those are the measurements that decide whether a dining room feels generous.
