Oxblood walls, tobacco leather and a red star print

Two chairs facing the record player make a fairly clear suggestion about the evening. A small table can come within reach of either seat, and the records stay close to the turntable. Oxblood walls and a red star print give the room plenty to look at between tracks.

THE DESIGN

The chairs face the sound system, rather than a television added by habit. Their open teak frames leave the centre light, while the broad sideboard gives the turntable and speakers a settled position.

Star Power strengthens the red wall with a different red surface: textured, marked and punctuated by white stars. Below it, walnut nesting tables and a patterned natural rug introduce finer changes of tone. There is enough to look at without turning the room into a display of equipment.

Start with where you sit

The pair of Kendari chairs establishes the listening position. The smaller table can move within reach, leaving the space between the chairs useful.

Put the records nearby

Shelving and closed storage keep the collection close to the player. The sideboard’s doors and drawers also give smaller objects somewhere to go.

Balance the dark paint with texture

Leather catches the window light; the rug breaks up the timber floor. A reading lamp adds a second use without changing the room’s character.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose the activity you want a secondary room to support, then give it the best position. Avoid adding furniture for uses that rarely happen.
