Lincoln, Nebraska. An original three-season addition imagined for an older two-storey home.

A games table gives this sunroom a reason to draw people away from the sofa. Four honey-coloured wicker chairs gather around it, with cards ready and a cupboard of games close by. The plum window frames make the autumn leaves outside look particularly bright.

The floor is the cheerful part of the arrangement. Its clay-and-cream checks hold their own beneath the furniture, while the curves of the chairs soften the grid of windows. The colours have enough depth to make the room interesting on an overcast day, when a sunroom cannot rely on shafts of sunlight to supply all its atmosphere. Woven blinds repeat the honey tones of the chairs and give the upper windows a softer edge.

A round pedestal table brings the group together, with no corners dictating the seating and a central support that leaves each chair its own approach. A round table still needs enough room for people to get up; that is best tested with the seats you intend to use. The small Cabo C-table gives a drink somewhere to go when a game spreads across the main surface. It is a useful addition to any room where the largest table regularly has another job.

The low cupboard gives the games a permanent home and keeps the glazing clear. A few books and flowers prevent it from looking like equipment storage. This could equally be a table for a puzzle, drawing or an idle Sunday newspaper. Choose the activity you want more of, and keep its ordinary requirements nearby. As a three-season concept for Nebraska, the room is meant for comfortable weather; in a cold spell, take the game into a heated room.

01

A floor with personality

Clay-and-cream checks make the room lively before any accessories are added.

02

Plum beside honey

The dark window frames sharpen the outline of the room; the warm wicker keeps the seating group inviting.

03

The game stays close

Low storage beside the table makes it easy to choose an activity and put it away, with a spare surface for drinks.

What to borrow

Give a secondary room an activity of its own, with the seating, light and storage that make it easy to begin.
