The terracotta courtyard workroom

Published

A terracotta workroom opening towards a shaded courtyard.

The courtyard is there to look up at, rather than to glare behind the screen. This terracotta workroom puts its desk across the light and its strongest picture beyond the working surface.

THE DESIGN

A lovely view is not much help if it sits directly behind a reflective screen. The desk in this workroom receives courtyard light from the side, bringing texture to the timber without putting the brightest opening in the centre of the working view. The practical relationship comes before the styling.

The Gallery Back Shell desk has a raised edge and three small drawers. The brown Gio chair brings chrome beside the timber, while the grooved cabinet takes papers and equipment off the desk. The chair still needs room to pull back without meeting the cabinet.

Red Orange carries the strongest colour to the wall. Its broad divisions remain readable from the seat, leaving the small objects on the desk free to change with the work. The courtyard supplies a second place to rest the eye.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Put the desk across the light, then make the rest worth looking up at.

Colour palette

  • Terracotta
  • Chalk
  • Olive
  • Warm wood
  • Orange red
01

Turn across the window

Side light helps the desk relate to the courtyard while avoiding a direct screen-to-window axis. Check reflections from the actual seated position.

02

Keep the working edge clear

Small drawers take stationery off the top. The raised gallery gives the desk a defined back without requiring a shelf above the monitor.

03

Use closed storage nearby

The grooved cabinet provides another material rhythm and a place for the less attractive working contents. It stays outside the chair's route.

04

Give looking up a reward

Red Orange sets a bold focus away from the screen. Its simple large areas of colour leave the smaller objects on the desk free to change.

WHAT TO BORROW

Arrange the desk around light and reflections first. Then choose one artwork that makes the wall beyond work worth your attention.
