The warehouse kitchen for long suppers

Published

A warehouse kitchen with roof glazing, brick walls and a nearby supper table.

The cook should not have to cross a warehouse to join dinner. A long table sits near the working surface, with room for conversation on either side of the aisle.

THE DESIGN

A big kitchen can put an unnecessarily long walk between preparing dinner and joining it. The dining table here stays close to the stainless-steel working surface, with a usable aisle between. Roof glazing provides the larger drama; the furniture concentrates the social life at a more human height.

The 240cm Nakamura table has a broad stone-effect top and substantial timber supports. Buffalo chairs bring tan upholstery and cane backs around it, replacing some of the hard industrial surfaces with finer texture. A pair of Luna pendants lowers the visual centre over the meal, while the four-door Luxor sideboard provides a separate serving surface against the brick.

Street Dancer gives the wall movement and a strong black-and-white contrast. Its presence is enough to hold the dining end without a crowded tabletop. Tomato-red touches draw warmth from the brick, and the larger stretches of steel remain part of the working kitchen. The scale is generous; the journey to the table is deliberately short.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A generous kitchen works better when dinner stays close.

01

Keep preparation within conversation

The table sits near the working surface. Allow for an occupied dining chair and somebody cooking before judging the aisle.

02

Warm the industrial materials

Tan upholstery, cane and woven shades introduce finer textures against brick, steel and concrete. They work at the scale of hands and seats.

03

Lower the focus over dinner

Two woven pendants gather attention above the table. Their placement gives the tall space a more intimate centre.

04

Give the wall a moving subject

Street Dancer adds a figure and a sense of action to the brick wall. Its monochrome palette keeps it distinct from the warmer furniture.

WHAT TO BORROW

In a large kitchen, measure the journey from preparation to the occupied table. More floor space is useful only when the arrangement makes good use of it.
