A cream bedroom with a red line

Published

A plain new-build apartment bedroom

One paprika line gives these plain cream walls something to respond to. It runs above the low grey bed, turns the corner and leaves the floor free of extra furniture.

THE DESIGN

Some new-build bedrooms are difficult to decorate precisely because there is so little to respond to. No fireplace, no alcove, no particular view to build a scheme around. Here, a narrow paprika band supplies that missing reference. It runs above the headboard, turns the corner and picks up again beyond the window. Most of the room remains cream.

The bed is a low, grey-lacquered Manhattan frame. Its plain surface is useful beside softly creased cotton and a darker timber floor: the materials have different characters without needing several patterns. Walnut-fronted Alba cabinets sit on each side, their black cases giving the small pieces a definite outline. There is no matching chest or occasional chair competing for the remaining floor.

Brass Moti lamps keep the cabinet tops available and bring a little detailed metalwork into the otherwise simple room. Cream curtains cover the window when needed, then draw back to the sides. If borrowing the painted band, mock up its height with tape and check it from the bed as well as the doorway. The line should relate to your own headboard, window and switches; it is not a universal measurement.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

One deliberate line can give a plain room character without taking an inch of floor.

01

Give the walls a reference line

The paprika band sits just above the headboard and turns the corner towards the window. A single, continuous height gives the plain walls something to do without adding panelling, shelves or a feature wall.

02

Let grey sharpen the cream

The low Manhattan frame stays grey. Its smooth lacquer makes the rumpled bedding and cream paint look softer by comparison, while the simple headboard leaves plenty of wall visible above the bed.

03

Keep the dark colour below

Chocolate-brown flooring gives the pale bed a clear outline. The black bedside cases continue that lower, darker part of the scheme; there is no need to repeat the same weight in tall freestanding furniture.

04

Leave room on the bedside

The Moti lamps hang above the cabinets, so their bases do not occupy the tops. A book and a glass still have somewhere to go, with the two drawers taking the items that would otherwise gather around them.

05

Stop before the idea gets diluted

The narrow red line and folded throw are enough colour for this room. Extra patterned cushions, another accent chair or a collection of small pictures would ask for attention the scheme has already placed.

WHAT TO BORROW

Try one precise mark before buying more furniture. A narrow band of colour can give a plain bedroom identity while leaving its useful floor and quiet surfaces intact.
