Put the richness on the walls
Tobacco runs around the room and into the shallow recess. It gives the small space a complete colour identity without requiring every object to make its own statement.

ROOM 95 · Dining Room
A narrow town flat with a shallow party-wall recess and a plain sash window
Tobacco walls let the furniture stay spare. Smoked glass and cane leave the narrow room visible through the table group, while one rose-patterned curtain supplies most of the pattern.

The usual response to a small dining room is to make everything pale. This one takes another route. Tobacco gives the walls enough presence that the furniture can stay comparatively spare. The glass table has a precise black frame; the chairs echo it, but their woven backs let the room remain visible through the group.
A narrow room is easily consumed by the things that collect around a meal. The shallow recess gives ceramics and books a place away from the tabletop. Its contents are varied, yet they read as one small collection because they share a ledge and a background. The table is free to change from an ordinary lunch to a supper with friends.
The curtain brings the looser, collected feeling. Rose softens the brown without washing it out, and its broken geometric pattern is a bolder gesture than several little patterned accessories. The small Chakai pendant marks the centre of the meal. Its wood shade and open metal cage connect with the furniture materials without turning them into a matching suite.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
Tobacco runs around the room and into the shallow recess. It gives the small space a complete colour identity without requiring every object to make its own statement.
Smoked glass reveals the table frame and the floor beneath. Cane backs and slim black chair legs add detail without forming a solid upholstered barrier around the meal.
The recess holds a small group of ceramics and books. They have a proper home off the table, leaving space for food and conversation instead of a permanent centrepiece obstacle course.
A generous rose-and-tobacco curtain gives the scheme its seventies inflection. The chairs stay plain and the artwork has a broad pale field, so the pattern can be enjoyed from across the table.
The Chicago table measures 120 by 80 centimetres. Here it seats four with one chair on each side, keeping a compact footprint; measure the chairs pulled out as well as tucked in before choosing a table.
WHAT TO BORROW
Give a narrow dining room one strong background and one place for the things you collect. Then judge the furniture by how much room remains when people are actually sitting down.
