Put the light over the gathering
The Quinn pendant centres the table and shows its hammered surface in the warm light. Small candleholders add detail below without competing with it.

The jewel-box dining room

Aubergine walls, hammered brass and graphic pink
This is a dining room for the hours when the windows turn dark. Light falls on four cream chairs and the round table, leaving aubergine around the edges. Graphic pink and orange above the sideboard keep the candlelit room from taking itself too seriously.
See the product sourcesTHE DESIGN
This dining room is allowed to be dark around the edges. Light falls on the table, chairs and timber sideboard, giving those surfaces the attention they need. The round tabletop leaves a clear route around a compact group of four seats.
Color Theory supplies the surprise above the sideboard. Its simple bright shapes sit comfortably beside the old-fashioned wall mouldings because the furniture is equally clear in outline. Cream upholstery holds a lighter band at table height.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
Design for the hours when the room comes into its own.
Colour palette
- Aubergine
- Dark timber
- Aged brass
- Warm cream
- Art pink
- Art orange
Leave the chairs room to move
Exposed timber floor keeps the area around the round table uncomplicated. The pedestal also leaves the seating edge clear of corner legs.
Mix eras through shape
Panelled walls and graphic art can share a room when their proportions are deliberate. The sideboard’s strong grain gives them a warm material between the two.
WHAT TO BORROW
Judge a dining-room palette after dark as well as by daylight. A clear pool of light over the table can make a deeper wall colour feel inviting.
