A red kitchen that doesn’t shout

Updated

Oxblood cabinetry, warm timber and sunflower yellow

Breakfast needs somewhere for knees as well as bowls. The open island supplies both, breaking up the deep red cabinetry with a lighter timber structure. A sunflower print beside the dining table gives the kitchen a yellow accent worth looking at over coffee.

THE DESIGN

Red can occupy a whole kitchen when the surrounding decisions stay clear. Flat fronts make a continuous colour field, while pale worktops and open space beneath the breakfast island stop that field becoming a solid block.

Mengwi stools and the round Tribesigns table bring wood into the room at two heights. Black spindle chairs draw a finer outline near the window. Three Sunflowers In A Vase adds yellow and turquoise on the dry dining wall, where a picture can be enjoyed from both sides of the kitchen.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Let the red carry the architecture, then lighten the furniture.

Colour palette

  • Deep tomato / oxblood red
  • Chalk white
  • Stainless steel
  • Warm timber
  • Soft neutral
01

An island you can sit at

The open base leaves proper knee space behind the stools. Keeping the sink in the rear working run also leaves an uninterrupted surface for breakfast and preparation.

02

Warmth without more red

Wooden seats, a jute runner and the Chakai pendants soften the cabinets through material. They do not need to repeat the wall of colour.

03

Give art a dry wall

The sunflower print belongs beside the dining area, clear of the hob and sink. Its smaller yellow passages brighten the red without covering another large surface.

WHAT TO BORROW

Resolve the working aisle and seating space first. A confident cabinet colour becomes much easier to live with when the room still moves well.

Tribesigns Brown 120cm Round Dining Table

A generous round table with a sculptural crossed base

The round top keeps the dining area sociable, while the broad crossed base gives this table a stronger presence than a simple four-legged design. The selected Brown version measures 120cm across and 75cm high, with an engineered-wood construction and a rustic wood-effect finish. Pair it with uncomplicated upholstered chairs and a deeper wall colour to bring out the pattern in the top. Designed for four people; leave room around it for chairs to pull out comfortably. The table is sold without chairs, and the accessories shown are styling props.
