A spare key to the garden

Published

A period-house annexe, conceived for Norfolk.

A spare room becomes a more generous invitation when there is somewhere to sit before bed. This annexe pairs a charcoal sofa with a light cane chair, leaving a glimpse of the bedroom beyond. Ochre walls and a faded rose rug give the little room warmth without filling it with objects.

THE DESIGN

The low boarded roof keeps the scale intimate. A landscape above the sofa gives the far wall a settled focus, while the round glass table leaves the rug visible through its centre.

A small cupboard carries a reading lamp and a few useful books. The bedroom door has a clear approach beside the seating, so an overnight bag can pass through without being lifted over a chair.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A separate sitting place makes a small annexe comfortable beyond bedtime.

01

A room before the bedroom

The sitting area offers somewhere to read or talk during a visit.

02

A light table

The glass top keeps the centre of the compact group open to view.

03

Warmth on the walls

Ochre makes the charcoal sofa feel less severe.

04

A clear path to bed

The doorway remains beside the seating rather than behind it.

WHAT TO BORROW

In a guest annexe, prioritise a comfortable place to sit with a bag and a book.
