A desk with space around it
The walnut desk stands forward of the storage wall, so its slim legs and open knee space remain visible. The white chair faces the laptop squarely, giving the working position an obvious direction.

An illustrated concept for Lisbon apartment study.
A walnut desk stands clear of the walls in this Lisbon study, with a white swivel chair facing the laptop. Olive shutters and blue cupboards bring measured colour beneath a large terracotta-and-ink abstract.
See the product sourcesThe white chair gives this study a welcome change of pace. Its curved shell and chrome base sit lightly in front of the walnut desk, with afternoon sun reaching across the floor from the shuttered window. In this illustrated Lisbon apartment, the desk stands free of the walls and the storage runs behind it, leaving the working surface to face the room. Olive shutters soften the bright opening; dusty blue cupboards carry the larger blocks of colour below the art. There is enough going on that a few books and a glass of water look entirely at home.

Colour palette
- Warm ivory
- Walnut
- Dusty blue
- Soft white
- Terracotta
Three colours at different heights
Olive shutters frame the window, blue cupboards sit low, and the large abstract puts terracotta above them. Separating those colours by height lets each occupy a substantial area without crowding the desk.
What to borrow
Try a freestanding desk when wall storage can take the files and equipment. Allow for the chair in use and for access to the cupboards behind it. A contrasting chair can lighten the view across a dark wooden desktop.
The architecture is an imagined European setting; linked product references are sourced for UK readers. Delivery to this setting has not been verified.
