Books beside the glass

Published

A victorian detached, conceived for Nottinghamshire.

The books are what make you want to stay. They run along the old brick wall at sofa height, close enough to browse from a chair, while the garden fills the other side of the room. Teal upholstery and rose-painted shelves give this conservatory a little depth; pale linen chairs keep the group easy in the daylight.

THE DESIGN

Keeping the brick exposed gives the addition a substantial wall to furnish against. The shelves sit below the sconces and leave room for pictures to lean among the pots. Their muted pink picks up the warmer flecks in the masonry.

A round table draws the three seats together. The rug reaches underneath them, leaving the garden side of the floor free. Roof blinds soften the overhead light, and the floor lamp gives the reading chair a reason to remain useful after dusk.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Low bookshelves and a compact sitting group give the glass room the comforts of a library.

Colour palette

  • Teal
  • Dusty rose
  • Honey brick
  • Linen
01

Books within reach

Low shelving puts paperbacks beside the seats and leaves the brick visible above.

02

A deeper colour

Teal has enough weight to hold its own against the bright glazing.

03

One sitting group

The round table and generous rug bring the separate chairs into the conversation.

04

Light that can soften

Fabric roof blinds temper the direct sun; a shaded lamp serves the evening.

WHAT TO BORROW

Use the solid wall in a glazed room for something you enjoy doing, such as browsing books.
