Breakfast in lilac

Published

A edwardian semi, conceived for Surrey.

Lilac is an unexpected companion for an oak frame, and a rather good one. It cools the timber's honey colour while the marble table catches the morning light. The fitted bench leaves the centre open enough for two movable chairs, a newspaper and breakfast that needn't be hurried.

THE DESIGN

The bench stops short of the garden door. That small break matters in a room where a table, plants and seating all compete for the perimeter. A round top is forgiving when someone gets up halfway through a meal.

Oxblood cushions give the pale walls a stronger note. Small botanical pictures sit on the solid wall, and the café curtain filters the lower part of the side window without losing the view into the trees.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A fitted bench makes space for a proper breakfast table beneath the oak gable.

01

A bench along the wall

Fitted seating uses the edge of the room and keeps loose chair legs to a minimum.

02

Lilac and oak

The cool paint makes the warmth of the structural timber more apparent.

03

A round centre

The marble top offers a generous surface without putting a corner into the route.

04

A little privacy

The short curtain covers the lower glazing while the upper panes remain clear.

WHAT TO BORROW

Try one cool, pale colour beside warm structural timber before adding more brown.
