Make room for the teenage collector

Published

A square bedroom in an ordinary suburban townhouse

The answer to a teenager’s growing collection is rarely another empty shelf. This room separates the things worth looking at today from the things worth keeping, using chartreuse, lilac and a bed that earns its floor space.

THE DESIGN

A collection becomes clutter when every object has to be on show. Here, the wall holds a small current selection of printed favourites. The rest can be kept in the bed drawers. That distinction lets the room express an interest without making the desk, windowsill and floor do the work of a display cabinet.

The KAOS wall bar is used with peach cotton sling shelves, giving paper sleeves and small books a place to face out. These are fabric shelves, so this arrangement is for printed material rather than a precarious line of glass or ceramic objects. Follow the system’s fixing and loading instructions; with the shelves in use, it is a storage arrangement rather than a climbing area.

Chartreuse supplies the room’s energy. A solid anthracite bed keeps it from becoming sugary, while lilac curtains and red cloth make a surprisingly assured pair. The small French-grey desk introduces a different furniture shape, and its adjustable lamp can turn towards a sketchbook. There is no requirement for the collection to remain the same: the structure is what stays.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Put the current favourites on show, and give the rest somewhere to disappear.

01

Give the collection an edge

Three canvas slings make a clear display area for sleeves, comics and small editions. Their limited width encourages a changing selection rather than asking every new find to earn another patch of wall.

02

Keep an archive below the bed

The Maisie bed puts storage drawers beneath its pull-out underbed. The clear floor alongside matters as much as the drawers themselves: a useful storage bed must still have room to open.

03

Leave one surface for making things

A sketchbook and pencils fit the compact writing desk. Collections stay elsewhere. The adjustable chair can be set for the person using it; check the fit of the chair, desk height and legroom together.

04

Let a dark bed hold the colour

Anthracite gives the chartreuse walls a firm companion. Lilac curtains and red bedding are large, plain blocks, so the room can carry several colours without relying on a scatter of mismatched cushions.

05

Choose one picture with a point of view

Vinyl Lovers connects the displayed sleeves to a larger graphic composition. It is one deliberate artwork, leaving the smaller personal finds free to change without constantly rebuilding the whole scheme.

WHAT TO BORROW

Separate display from keeping. Give the current favourites a defined place, and make the overflow easy to put away without dismantling the room.
