Purple makes room for company

A small dining salon in a Parisian period-apartment concept

A small dining room should be easy to join. Aubergine walls, a carved round table and four grey velvet chairs make this salon feel ready for company, with a clear route in and a yellow artwork worth talking about.

THE DESIGN

A dining room loses much of its pleasure if getting to your chair requires everyone else to move. This salon starts with a realistic number of places: four, around a round table. The table sits towards the window, leaving the doorway side open. It is a room arranged for the people who use it regularly, rather than for the largest gathering it might accommodate once a year.

The furniture mixes periods without turning the room into a historical exercise. Valentina’s carved pedestal has an old-fashioned weight; the grey Cannes chairs and tiered glass chandelier introduce more streamlined shapes. Behind them, the shallow Montara sideboard gives tableware and linen a home. Blush trim and ceiling soften the transition from aubergine walls to the adjoining hall.

The yellow Wheat artwork is the strongest contrast. Its purple-blue streak connects it to the room, while the larger yellow field refuses to disappear into the paint. The selected reference is a 24-by-36-inch print, framed in black; it leaves wall visible on both sides above the cabinet. Keep the same discipline when adapting the layout: allow chairs to pull out, check the table base against feet and knees, and preserve a route that does not depend on an empty seat.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Choose four good places to sit, then protect the space around them.

  • Aubergine
  • Blush
  • Golden timber
  • Grey velvet
  • Wheat yellow
01

Plan for the meal you actually host

Four chairs surround a 110cm round table. That is the room’s everyday arrangement, rather than a larger table kept ready for an occasional crowd. The right-hand side remains a route into the room.

02

Put the support in the middle

The Valentina’s sculpted pedestal gives the table its character and gathers its support beneath the centre. The low spreading feet still need checking against chair positions, but there are no four corner legs to dictate where every place must go.

03

Take storage depth seriously

The Montara sideboard is only 35cm deep. It provides drawers, closing cupboards and a serving surface without projecting as far into the room as a deeper dining cabinet would.

04

Give purple a bright interruption

Wheat brings a broad yellow field into the aubergine scheme. Its darker band relates to the walls, but the dominant colour does something more useful than matching them: it supplies a clear visual contrast.

05

Let glass carry the overhead detail

The Kirindi chandelier repeats small rectangular panes in stepped tiers. Its 47cm width sits comfortably within the table’s diameter, giving the tall room a focus while allowing the wall colour to remain visible through it.

WHAT TO BORROW

Set the chair count before choosing the table. A dining room for four can feel more generous and more sociable than a larger arrangement that makes every arrival awkward.
