Plum walls, ochre velvet and a dark floral artwork give this Victorian reception its weight. A generous patterned rug gathers the seating around a round glass table.

The plum reception room

Published

A tall Victorian reception with a sash window, fireplace and opening into a second room.

The open doorway is part of the sitting arrangement. A round glass table gathers the seats without turning the route to the next room into an obstacle course.

THE DESIGN

A reception room with another room behind it has to accommodate people passing through as well as people sitting down. The seating gathers on the large rug, with the open doorway left legible at its edge. The circular table avoids a projecting corner on that route.

Above the fireplace, Botanical Night Garden II uses the height of the chimney breast. Its red flowers sit against plum walls, while the ochre sofa brings a much larger patch of lighter colour down to the seats. The picture and Aluva table are the linked references; the sofa, rug and remaining furnishings are styling.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

The seating has a centre without occupying the route through the room.

Colour palette

  • Plum
  • Ochre
  • Mulberry
  • Warm timber
  • Glass and brass
01

Colour with depth

Plum extends across the walls and mouldings. The recesses remain visible in daylight without a contrasting white outline around every architectural detail.

02

An artwork with presence

The tall floral picture occupies the chimney breast confidently. Red blooms introduce small warmer notes that echo in the textiles.

03

Ochre against plum

The sofa is lighter than the wall behind it, so its arms and seat remain easy to read. The contrast comes from one substantial piece rather than a scattering of bright accessories.

04

A light centre

The round glass table reveals the rug beneath it. Its thin metal frame balances the heavier sofa and patterned floor.

05

One seating group

A large rug reaches through the main arrangement. Keep a usable path to the adjoining room, and respect the clearances of any working fireplace.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose the sofa, rug and main artwork as a group. In a tall room, three properly scaled pieces can settle the composition more effectively than many small additions.
