Stripes, cork and avocado

Published

A 1970s single-storey house in Essex, England.

The headboard gets the broad stripes; the quilt gets the smaller print. Giving each pattern a different scale lets this 1970s bedroom use both without making the bed hard to read.

THE DESIGN

The low ceiling suits furniture with a substantial horizontal line. The striped headboard provides it, with honey-coloured cork and avocado around the bed. A kilim bench by the window adds another pattern at a smaller distance from the floor.

Open brass bedside tables avoid adding two more solid blocks beside the frame. The lamp bases and shades are separate selections. A six-drawer dresser takes the clothes, leaving the bench available for dressing rather than permanent storage. The orange artwork picks up the room's bolder mood without repeating the bed's stripes.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Pattern becomes easier to live with when the room has a strong material backbone.

01

Timber gives the pattern a frame

The bed's broad rails and the chest's solid outline give the finer upholstery and woven fronts a clear boundary.

02

Three scales are enough

Narrow stripes, a fine quilt print and a broader kilim weave each read differently. Their shared cream ground stops them fighting.

03

Avocado needs a lighter neighbour

The cream ceiling, pillows and quilt lift the wall colour. Cork and timber keep that contrast warm.

04

Open bedsides leave some breathing room

The slim metal tables are useful beside a substantial bed. Their open construction prevents the furniture from forming one solid block.

05

A bench can move away from the bed

Putting the seat beneath the window gives the room another useful spot and preserves the clear route across the foot.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose one substantial material before choosing your patterns. A clear timber outline and a repeated cream ground can make quite different prints feel at home together.

BonVache Six-Drawer Rattan Chest, Brown

Woven texture with room for everyday storage

Six rattan-fronted drawers bring a lighter texture to this brown BonVache chest. Rounded rectangular inserts, slim gold handles and a shaped low plinth make the broad unit feel considered without being ornate. The engineered-wood cabinet also includes a charging hub with AC sockets, USB and USB-C connections; confirm the supplied socket format with the retailer. Petrol blue, mustard linen and a warm lamp give the brown finish depth. Decorative accessories are styling.
