The Art Deco bedroom after dark

Published

A 1930s city apartment in London, imagined for evenings at home.

A bedroom used after dark needs more than an impressive bed. Here, two shaded lamps bring the light down to pillow height and leave the teal walls behind them.

THE DESIGN

The cream headboard has enough height and shape to hold its own against deep teal. Its vertical divisions supply the main pattern, so the bedding can stay relatively plain. The leather bench gives dressing a separate place at the foot of the bed, provided there is still room to pass it.

Walnut and rattan bedside tables bring smaller, more open surfaces beside the upholstery. The Rasan lamp bases and Dia shades are separate purchases; together they give each side its own light. The glass cabinet and oval mirror catch smaller reflections rather than turning the whole bedroom shiny. The bed selection is a frame, with the mattress supplied separately.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Art Deco works best when the geometry is remembered and the costume is left behind.

Colour palette

  • Petrol teal
  • Cream
  • Walnut
  • Tobacco
  • Aged brass
  • Ink
01

Geometry carries the reference

The bed's vertical panels, oval drawer inserts and mirror give the room a family of shapes. They suggest the period without repeating the same motif everywhere.

02

Dark colour makes the light count

Teal holds the edges together after sunset. The pale bed and warm lamps create clear places for the eye to settle, so the room feels intimate rather than dim.

03

Walnut warms the glamour

The bedside finish and fluted-glass cabinet bring timber into the evening palette. Brass is more convincing beside that grain than on every surrounding surface.

04

Pattern stays close to the materials

Fine quilt stripes and the rug's woven borders reward a closer look. They add rhythm without competing with the upholstered headboard.

05

The useful pieces earn their space

Drawers, a linen cabinet and a narrow bench serve ordinary routines. Clear floor around them keeps a composed bedroom from becoming a display of objects.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose two or three related shapes, then repeat them through useful furniture. The period reference will feel stronger when it does not rely on themed accessories.

Furnishion Vienna Wingback Bed Frame, Cream Plush, Double

Cream upholstery with a strong panelled shape

Broad vertical panels across the headboard and footboard give Furnishion's Vienna bed a confident outline. The selected 4ft6 double frame is upholstered in Cream Plush velvet, with a wingback headboard, wooden frame and supporting slats. A tobacco-coloured wall, burgundy coverlet and blue ceramic lamps give the pale upholstery depth. This is the bed-only option; the mattress, bedding and other furniture in the styling image are separate.

BonVache Bedside Tables, Set of 2 Walnut / Natural Hand-Woven Rattan with Charging Connections

Bedside tables

The walnut finish and woven rattan fronts give these bedside tables a contrast of tone and texture that works well with pale bedding. As a pair, they can give both sides of a bed a consistent starting point, with room to vary the lamps or accessories. Charging connections are included; the separate phone dock in the styling image is not.
