The apricot reading nook with a collected wall

Published

An apricot window nook with one generous chair and a mixed picture wall.

An ornate grey chair, a matching footstool and apricot walls turn a spare corner into somewhere to stay. Two very different artworks give the nook a collected character, with a lamp and small table exactly where they are useful.

THE DESIGN

A reading corner can look finished long before it feels comfortable. The test comes when a book, a cup and a pair of tired feet arrive. Here, the Rococo chair and footstool establish a single generous place to settle, with the round chestnut table beside the arm and the Nordi lamp close to the shoulder.

The carved black frame remains distinct against apricot. Grey velvet occupies the chair and stool, with a raspberry cushion changing the colour at a smaller scale. The rug covers the seated arrangement rather than marking an unused patch of floor.

Still and Amour Flower are an unlikely pair: a horizon beside a checkerboard and flower. They give the seat two different views without hiding the chair's outline. The arrangement offers plenty to look at, but it does not ask the reader to keep getting up.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A retreat starts with being able to put your feet up.

01

Complete the seated arrangement

The footstool, lamp and table are part of the chair's footprint. Judge the corner with all four pieces in place, including room to stand up.

02

Use colour around the upholstery

Apricot warms the wall while grey remains concentrated on the chair and stool. The black carved frame gives both a clear outline.

03

Collect by conversation

Still and Amour Flower share enough warm colour to sit together, yet their subjects and shapes differ. Matching prints are only one way to make a coherent wall.

04

Bring texture to the floor

The raised rug pattern makes a relatively small floor area interesting. It does not need a busy coffee table competing above it.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose the reading position first, then reach for the lamp switch and a cup from the seat. Those small distances determine whether the corner gets used.
