Two activities can coexist

ROOM 130 · Living Room
A 1970s detached house, conceived for Berkshire.
A book can stay open at the daybed while someone else takes the sofa. This family room gives the two activities separate edges, using the print and rug to bring their colours together.

The broad proportions of the 1970s house allow two activities to happen beside one another. Main seating occupies one group; the daybed provides a lower reading and play edge. The route through the room remains outside both.
Art comes before accessories. The print and rug give apricot, blue and smaller green notes a reason to appear together. Larger walls stay quieter, so the colour does not depend on adding more and more cushions.
A peach canvas pocket holds a small selection of books at a child's height, on its matching wall module. Closed storage deals with the rest. A family room looks more convincing when it can be tidied, rather than when it appears never to have been used.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
A low reading and play area sits beside the main seating rather than in the route across it.
The graphic print and rug establish the colour relationships before accessories are added.
The canvas pocket makes a small selection visible and reachable.
Broad pale walls let the stronger blue seating and smaller colour patches remain distinct.
WHAT TO BORROW
Leave a small project or open book at the secondary seat in your plan. The rest of the room should remain usable without tidying that activity away first.
