After dinner, out on the deck

Published

A large transitional family house, conceived for Columbus suburbs, OH.

Dinner is finished, but nobody has quite decided to go inside. A roof, four comfortable seats and a small game table make that indecision easy to live with. The route from the kitchen runs beside the group, so plates can be cleared without asking anyone to stand up. A bench catches the extra person; the garden remains in view.

THE DESIGN

The small table changes the reason for sitting down. A game can continue after the meal, and the roof makes the deck feel like the next room rather than somewhere to be packed away. The kitchen connection remains close enough for an ordinary evening.

Gray rope furniture keeps the group light beneath the solid ceiling. The bench offers a different kind of perch, while the principal seats face one another. There is no need to put every chair in a row toward the garden.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A sheltered deck becomes the next room in the evening rather than a separate destination.
