Low seats above the pool

Published

A contemporary hillside house, conceived for San Diego hills, CA.

The view can look after itself. What the people need is shade, a level place to lie down and somewhere within reach for a drink. Low black frames leave the horizon alone; a little timber keeps them from feeling severe. The route home stays on dry paving, apart from the water’s edge.

THE DESIGN

The terrace gives the body what the view cannot: shade, a level surface and a place for a drink. Two low loungers leave the horizon open, with enough paving around them for the room to remain useful rather than ceremonial.

Black mesh and slim aluminum frames keep the pieces quiet against the pale floor. Teak inserts interrupt the black frames. Rose towels stay on the loungers, and the solid cylinder table gives the two seats a shared surface. The house is reached along the dry side, not by negotiating the pool edge.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A low lounge group, broad shade and an ordinary place for drinks make a dramatic setting feel domestic.
