THE DESIGN

A family bathroom is asked to do several things before anyone has properly woken up. Someone needs the basin, someone needs a towel, and there is usually something waiting to go into the wash. Giving those small tasks a sensible place is a more useful starting point than trying to make the room look permanently untouched.

The broad Arno vanity gives this room its centre of gravity. Four drawers hold the supplies that otherwise drift across the counter, while the two basins let people get ready alongside one another. A toothbrush cup and soap can stay out because there is still room around them. The cabinet’s muted sage finish sits against a deeper blue-green wall, giving the white sanitaryware a clear setting without relying on extra decorative objects.

The fitted bath and separate shower serve different routines. The bath has an accessible edge and a useful ledge; the shower can be reached directly from the clear middle of the room. Neither asks someone to squeeze past an open drawer or climb around the other fitting. Pale, simply laid floor tiles make that shared space easy to read, and morning light from the wide side window keeps the deeper colour fresh.

Reclaimed timber and terracotta towels make the everyday equipment feel at home. Nkuku’s Ibo stool gives clean towels a landing place, while its lidded Renu basket catches laundry in the dry corner. Hooks sit close to the places where towels are actually needed. None of these things depends on a child-friendly motif or a perfectly arranged shelf. The room feels designed because ordinary family life has been allowed for.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A family bathroom starts with the things everyone needs at once.

Colour palette

  • Deep blue-green
  • Warm timber
  • Chalk white
  • Terracotta
  • Putty
01

Storage makes the room calmer

Four broad drawers put daily supplies close to the two basins and leave enough counter space for things that are used every morning.

02

The centre belongs to everyone

Clear floor between the fittings gives more than one person a useful route through the room.

03

Bath and shower do different jobs

The bath serves slower evenings and younger children; a separate shower keeps the morning routine straightforward.

04

Colour gives the practical fittings a setting

The deeper blue-green wall gives the sage cabinet and white sanitaryware a clear setting. Pale tile keeps the working areas bright.

05

Ordinary objects have somewhere to land

A stool, laundry basket, hooks and a towel rail earn their space by making small daily tasks easier.

WHAT TO BORROW

Plan storage, towels and laundry at the same time as the bath and basin. When the everyday things have useful places, colour can give the whole room confidence.
