The family room with two centres

Published

A long family extension with garden light and two separate seating groups.

A long family room need not make everyone watch the same thing. Wine-coloured sofas, tobacco chairs and two patterned rugs divide this garden-facing space into a place for conversation and a quieter television end.

THE DESIGN

The difficulty with a large family room is often deciding where to sit. One arrangement can leave an awkward stretch of floor at the far end; a sofa aimed at the screen can make everything else feel secondary. Here, the room earns its length through two useful centres. The furniture gathers locally, while the route beside it remains legible.

Binky sofas give both ends the same deep wine note. The Harold swivel chairs introduce brown upholstery and a different sitting posture, and the Junya rugs draw a boundary beneath each group. Smaller nesting tables bring a surface closer to the seats. Their open frames prevent the centre from becoming another solid block of furniture.

The three figurative works add a looser conversation above the upholstery. Their different colours and compositions keep the arrangement from becoming too symmetrical. Daylight supplies the larger contrast against aubergine, so the walls can stay rich without requiring every cushion and object to be bright.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Two places to settle, with a clear route between them.

Colour palette

  • Aubergine
  • Wine velvet
  • Tobacco
  • Chartreuse
  • Warm oak
01

Give each group its own centre

Separate rugs make the two seating areas readable from the doorway. The gap between them belongs to movement, rather than an extra piece of furniture.

02

Repeat the useful pieces

Repeating the sofa and rug ties the long room together. Chair positions can respond to conversation at one end and the screen at the other.

03

Keep tables within reach

The nesting tables sit close to the upholstery. A smaller surface beside a seat can be more useful than a large table across an empty stretch of rug.

04

Let the art vary

Harmonic Abstraction, Abstract Geometry of Being and Every Man Is a Mountain bring three distinct figures into the room. Similar framing gives the group enough continuity.

WHAT TO BORROW

In a long room, plan two actual activities before choosing a larger sofa. Draw the route through the space after the chairs are occupied.
