The windows have the best of it

Published

A tall, light-filled bedroom in a Georgian townhouse in Bath, England.

The tall sash windows are the bedroom's best furniture. An open bronze bed frame lets their proportions remain visible, with celadon carried between them.

THE DESIGN

There is little reason to compete with windows this tall. The open bed frame leaves daylight and wall visible through its outline, while the chest keeps its bulk away from the glazing. A chair near the window makes that part of the room useful after getting dressed.

The bedside arrangement is deliberately unequal. The Maba nesting tables are 54cm and 45cm high, so they need trying beside the actual mattress before being treated as a conventional pair. Related lamps bring the two sides together. Celadon and bronze do the larger work; the small differences stop the room feeling like a suite ordered in one go.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A Georgian bedroom rarely needs more decoration. Its proportions are already doing most of the work.

Colour palette

  • Celadon
  • Warm chalk
  • Moss
  • Washed walnut
  • Bronze
01

The windows set the rhythm

Their height and spacing provide the room's strongest decoration. Curtains draw clear of the glass and let the light reach the floor.

02

Pale colour needs a little weight

Celadon and chalk stay restful because the acacia chest and bronze frame give them something more substantial to sit beside.

03

Balance allows small differences

The nesting tables have different heights. Related lamps and a consistent finish hold the arrangement together without pretending they are identical.

04

A chair makes another use possible

The window corner gives reading its own place. Leaving the floor open around it matters more than adding a second small table.

05

Texture supplies the softer detail

Linen shades, a velvet quilt and a raised wool rug bring variation close to the body, while the upper walls remain calm.

WHAT TO BORROW

Let the best architectural feature determine where the room stays quiet. A beautiful window often needs clear space more than it needs another decorative object.

Yaheetech Vintage Metal Bed Frame, Bronze, King

Bronze metalwork with a light, open outline

Curved tube corners and slim decorative spindles give this Yaheetech frame its vintage character. The selected 5ft King is finished in Bronze, with a higher headboard, matching footboard and 32cm of clearance beneath the metal base. Overall dimensions are listed as 207L x 152W x 105H cm. Powder blue and ochre bring a fresh contrast to the darker metal. Mattress, bedding, baskets and surrounding furniture are styling.
