The work surface has a job
An uninterrupted stretch remains available for preparing food. The chopping board and loaf suggest an ordinary task without filling the whole counter.

ROOM 43 · Kitchen
An imagined Scandinavian-influenced new-build family kitchen.
There is a stretch of worktop ready for the groceries. Keeping it available is the point of the cupboards around it, and a better test of this kitchen than an empty surface in a photograph.

A clear worktop only stays clear if the room gives everyday equipment somewhere else to live. That is the useful starting point for this kitchen. Simple cupboard fronts gather the storage, while an open stretch of counter remains ready for a chopping board, a mixing bowl or the groceries that have just come through the door.
The setting is an imagined new-build home with Scandinavian influences: pale oak, muted green and a light floor, with daylight reaching the working area. Warmth comes from the timber and from small signs of use. A loaf on a board and two mugs are enough to suggest the next meal without making cooking compete with decoration.
The Haier fridge freezer sits at the end of a cabinet run. Its brushed silver front gives the warm finishes a cooler neighbour, and its one fridge door above two freezer drawers breaks the height into useful parts. It is a freestanding appliance, so the final installation needs the manufacturer's ventilation and door-opening clearances.
Two Mengwi stools serve the breakfast edge. Their 70cm seat height calls for an appropriately raised counter, rather than squeezing them beneath a standard low worktop. Above, the clear Varuna pendants repeat the warm wood in a smaller form. Daylight passes through the unlit glass shades.
The Shop selection covers the fridge freezer, stools, pendants, Niju board and Iba mugs. The fitted kitchen, sink, cooking appliances, worktops and finishes are architectural styling, not products supplied by this edit. The principle to take away is simple enough to apply to an existing kitchen: protect one useful preparation area, then make the nearest storage work harder.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
An uninterrupted stretch remains available for preparing food. The chopping board and loaf suggest an ordinary task without filling the whole counter.
The Mengwi stools give someone a place to sit near the cook. Their small round seats and open legs leave the breakfast edge visually light.
The silver Haier stands at the end of the cabinetry with space around it. Its single upper door and two freezer drawers remain easy to recognise and approach.
Two Varuna pendants use clear glass and warm timber caps. Their modest diameter avoids a heavy band across the kitchen, and both are off in daylight.
The indigo lines on the Iba mugs add a little colour to the oak and putty scheme. They have a daily purpose, so the decoration already earns its place.
WHAT TO BORROW
Choose the stretch of worktop you most often cook on and keep it ready for that task. Move the things that interrupt it into the nearest suitable storage.

Brushed silver and easy-access freezer drawers
The brushed silver finish sits comfortably beside deep blue cabinetry and warm timber. This freestanding Haier model has one upper fridge door and two separate freezer drawers, with a slim control panel that keeps the front visually simple. The selected version is the 360-litre, E-rated model without a water dispenser. It measures 59.5cm wide, 66.7cm deep and 185cm high; check the manufacturer's ventilation and door-opening clearances when planning its position. Cabinetry and accessories shown are styling props.
