Across the threshold in Pasadena

Published

A remodeled mid-century house, conceived for Pasadena, CA.

The opening is broad, but the rooms on either side do not need to match. A small rope loveseat and broad timber chairs make the patio a place of its own. The roofline and a flash of tangerine carry the connection. Between them, the slider still has a track: a useful reminder that a good threshold joins two different conditions.

THE DESIGN

The timber ceiling and dark structure carry the house’s lines outside. The furniture does not have to follow literally: a small rope loveseat and two broad weathered chairs establish a different rhythm on the patio. The visible track makes the threshold an honest join rather than a fantasy of weatherless living.

The Juliet table repeats the chairs’ pale timber while the darker rope keeps the group from becoming a matching suite. A tangerine chair inside provides a distant color connection. The open passage beside the glazing remains more important than any decorative continuity.
