The patio under a proper roof

Published

A large transitional detached house, conceived for Houston suburbs, TX.

The useful part of this patio begins with the roof. It reaches far enough to keep the chairs in shade, while a separate strip of paving takes people from the kitchen to the garden. The sitting group can therefore stay put. White cushions lighten the substantial teak frames; emerald doors give the brick wall a little conviction.

THE DESIGN

The roof reaches beyond the wall to shelter a complete sitting group. Its depth matters more than decorative details at the edge: the chairs belong within the shade, and the route to the garden remains separate. Cooking takes place beyond that covered group.

Kuba seating gives the patio enough weight to stand against brick and large emerald doors. White cushions keep the frames from reading as one dark mass. The square table repeats their straightforward shape without requiring a rug to gather them.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Deep shade and a generous path make the patio a living room instead of a hot strip beside the house.

01

Shade for the people

The roof covers the furniture as well as the facade.

02

A route at the side

Garden traffic does not cut between the seats.

03

Weight against brick

Substantial teak belongs to the scale of the shell.

04

A pale upper layer

White cushions lighten the timber group.

WHAT TO BORROW

Check where the shade falls on a seated person, not just on the paving.
