Out through the French doors

Published

A suburban Colonial Revival house, conceived for Fairfield County, CT.

The useful part of this terrace is the space beside the chairs. It lets someone carry lunch out through the French doors, or head into the garden, without walking through the conversation. A compact loveseat and two deeper chairs gather on the brick paving. The house gives them a pale backdrop; the garden supplies the rest. Nothing has to be moved before the terrace can be used.

THE DESIGN

Brick gives the terrace a domestic scale. Its small repeated units belong comfortably beside the pale doors, and the sitting group occupies only part of the paved area. The empty strip is useful space, even before anyone carries out a tray.

Havana seating keeps the timber language consistent without making every seat the same size. Charcoal cushions settle against the brick; the square Kuba table holds the group together. A garden room does not need a rug to explain where it begins.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Brick underfoot and a clear axis to the kitchen make the terrace useful before anyone adds a cushion.

01

Keep the doors useful

The sitting group leaves a separate approach to the house.

02

Brick sets the scale

Small paving units connect the terrace to the older shell.

03

Different seat sizes

A loveseat and deeper chairs accommodate different ways of sitting.

04

A quiet center

The square table supplies weight without adding another material.

WHAT TO BORROW

Give the serving route as much attention as the seating arrangement.
