Somewhere to put things

Published

A compact-to-medium bedroom in a modern London apartment.

Spare bedding has to live somewhere. Putting it beneath the mattress leaves this apartment bedroom room for clothes storage without filling every wall with furniture.

THE DESIGN

The ottoman bed takes the bulky things that would otherwise occupy a cupboard. It still needs space to lift, just as the wardrobe needs space for its doors. Draw those movements on the plan before deciding that everything fits.

A shallow chest uses less of the window side, while one bedside table avoids squeezing in a matching pair for appearances. Grey and clay keep the large storage pieces close in tone. The small rug belongs beside the bed, where feet land; it is not pretending to cover the whole sleeping area.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Storage earns its place when you can use it without moving something else.

Colour palette

  • Clay
  • Putty
  • Warm white
  • Pale oak
  • Soft charcoal
01

Closed storage reduces the work of looking

Drawers and doors take everyday items out of the visual field. The room stays calm without requiring every possession to be decorative.

02

Shallow furniture protects the route

A 35cm-deep chest earns its place below the window. The space in front of it remains useful for moving and opening drawers.

03

The bed gives the plan a clear direction

Placing the headboard against the side wall leaves the window wall available for light and storage. The side-on view makes that arrangement easy to understand.

04

Different surfaces beside grey

Oak-effect fronts remain distinct from the grey upholstery and white wardrobe. Clay textiles make the smaller colour change, so the room does not depend on every finish matching.

05

Small lighting suits the scale

The 35.5cm lamp is a modest bedside object. It provides light without demanding a larger table or another layer of furniture.

WHAT TO BORROW

Measure storage with its doors and drawers open. A piece that fits on the plan can still take away the space that makes a bedroom comfortable.

Vida Designs Veronica Ottoman Bed Frame, Dark Grey Linen, King

A simple upholstered bed with hidden storage

Veronica keeps its outline quiet with a plain rectangular headboard, low upholstered rails and a dark grey linen finish. Its gas-lift base opens to storage beneath the mattress. The selected King version is listed as 159cm wide and 82cm high; the retailer gives an overall length of roughly 208–210cm, so confirm clearance before ordering. Terracotta and indigo make a warm setting for the grey. This is the frame without a mattress; bedding and surrounding pieces are styling.

GFW Omari Side Table with Slatted Base, Oak Effect

Side table

The Omari side table pairs a round top with a slatted oak-effect base, giving a simple shape enough detail to hold its own beside a sofa. We like the contrast between those crisp vertical lines and softer upholstery, particularly a curved armchair or a loosely draped throw.

FEONASE Two-Door Two-Drawer Wardrobe, White

A slim wardrobe with shutter-door detail

White louvred doors and long black handles give this FEONASE wardrobe character without adding visual weight. Two lower drawers gather smaller items, while the hanging rail and upper compartment handle everyday clothes and folded pieces. The selected model is listed as 175cm high, 75cm wide and 48cm deep. We have paired it with dusty blue, warm timber and rust bedding for a bedroom that feels settled and useful.

Aooshine Touch Bedside Lamp, Wood Grain, 14in

A narrow bedside lamp with charging close by

A tall linen-textured shade and wood-grain base give this Aooshine lamp a simple, warm presence. The selected 14in model is listed at 35.5cm high with an 11.3cm base, touch-controlled brightness and USB-A and USB-C charging ports. It runs from mains power with a UK plug, and the listing includes an E27 warm-white LED bulb. Teal, walnut and a burgundy dish give the small lamp a richer bedside setting. One lamp is shown; surrounding furniture and accessories are styling.

Bonnlo Three-Drawer Fluted Chest, Oak

Fluted storage with a warm oak finish

Rounded vertical fluting gives this three-drawer Bonnlo chest its character. The oak-effect finish, small gold handles and short splayed legs bring warmth to the engineered-wood body. At 70cm wide, 35cm deep and 75cm high, it can sit beside a bed or provide storage along a smaller bedroom wall. We have styled it with rose plaster, a black timber bed and a modest bunch of coral flowers.
