Somewhere for the grown-up, too

Published

Contemporary new-build family home · Toddler nursery

An adult can spend a long time in a toddler's room. A comfortable chair beside the window acknowledges that, while the low bed and clear rug leave plenty of room for the smaller occupant. Sage paint gives an ordinary new-build room a little distinction.

THE DESIGN

The grey toddler bed keeps its short side guards and simple panelled frame. Beside it, six timber drawers take care of the daily supplies. The chest and adult chair can stay when the bed is outgrown; bedding and the things on the shelf can change more often.

A wall light serves the reading corner. Books sit together on the shelf and a low basket holds a few loose toys, leaving most of the rug free for play. Check the bed's mattress and age guidance with the retailer when adapting the idea at home.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Leave space for play and for the person reading the story.

Colour palette

  • Warm white
  • Soft sage
  • Oat
  • Pale timber
  • Quiet grey
  • Muted clay
01

Colour marks the sleeping corner

Sage sits behind the bed while the other walls stay pale. The smaller clay and butter colours can change with bedding and toys without repainting the whole room.

02

The furniture can stay

A full-sized chest and a comfortable adult chair make sense long after the toddler bed has been outgrown. Their grain, iron detailing and turned feet give the room character without asking for a theme.

03

Storage has real capacity

Six drawers keep daily supplies in one place. A low basket deals with loose toys, and the shelf gathers books above the chest.

04

Softness comes from texture

The woven chair and rug give the adult seat and play floor different textures from the smooth walls. More pattern would compete with the books and toys that will occupy them.

05

The middle belongs to play

Furniture sits around the edges, leaving the rug as usable floor space. The bed remains easy to approach, and an adult can settle beside the window without occupying the play area.

WHAT TO BORROW

Keep the middle free for play and give the adult chair a proper place beside it. A chest and comfortable chair can stay when the toddler bed is outgrown.
