The olive guest room that works between visits

Published

An olive guest bedroom with a separate window-side writing position.

Olive walls, a cane-panelled bed and a small writing desk make this guest room useful throughout the week. The work surface sits beside the window, leaving the bed and its route clear when someone comes to stay.

THE DESIGN

A guest room often spends more time waiting than hosting. Adding a desk can help, but only if the room still feels like a bedroom when a guest opens the door. Here, the writing position has its own patch of window light and a separate surface, so work does not have to migrate onto the duvet.

The Fleur bed introduces curved cane panels at both ends, with pale timber that remains distinct against olive. Chestnut pieces give storage more weight, and the small bedside surfaces leave somewhere obvious for a book and a glass. The desk's curved casing softens its outline without disguising the drawer or the space required to sit.

Mountain Wrangler brings a broad outdoor subject above the bed. Ochre textiles draw a little warmth from the picture and timber, rather than introducing an unrelated colour scheme at the foot. The tall amber lamp adds a lower evening glow. The arrangement has several jobs, but each one keeps its own place.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A guest room can earn its space between visits.

01

Give work a separate footprint

The desk sits beside daylight, clear of the bedside area. A guest should be able to use the bed without clearing a working surface first.

02

Keep the foot of the bed legible

The bed, rug and room share the same geometry. Leave enough space beyond the foot for the route to the wardrobe and desk.

03

Balance cane with darker timber

The light cane panels are open and delicate; chestnut storage has more visual weight. Together they avoid a room made entirely from pale woven surfaces.

04

Bring the landscape indoors

Mountain Wrangler gives the olive wall a wider horizon. The horses and warmer ground colours add detail above the quiet bedding.

WHAT TO BORROW

Make a dual-purpose guest room easy to hand over. Keep a clear bedside surface, usable clothing storage and work that can stay on its own desk.
