The courtyard beyond the bed

Published

A contemporary timber courtyard house in Surrey, England.

The low bed leaves the courtyard in view. With no tall headboard interrupting it, the window becomes part of the room even from the pillow.

THE DESIGN

This bedroom's Japanese influence is most useful in its proportions. The bed sits close to the floor, with a simple outline and little furniture rising above it. That leaves the courtyard opening as the largest shape in the view.

A reclaimed timber stool serves beside the bed, but its height needs checking against the low mattress platform. The small lamp belongs to that scale. Charcoal linen gives the bed a visible edge, and the cabinet contains the things that would quickly occupy the open floor. The spare space is useful only if it survives bedtime.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A quiet bedroom is not an empty bedroom. It is one where every material has been given enough room to register.

01

A lower bed changes the balance

The 30cm frame leaves more wall visible and gives the garden greater presence. It remains a raised bed with a clear underside.

02

Different timber textures belong together

Rough reclaimed furniture sits beside precise window joinery. Their shared natural tones allow their surfaces to differ.

03

Lighting can be a small object

The compact rechargeable lamp supplies a bedside glow without a large shade or a second layer of furniture.

04

Empty floor has a practical purpose

The clear area at the foot keeps the sliding-door route usable. Visually, it separates the bed from the glazing.

05

One substantial textile carries enough detail

Charcoal linen, woven stripes and loose fringe add richness. The rest of the bedding can remain simple.

WHAT TO BORROW

Check the height of the mattress and bedside surface together. A low frame changes how you sit down, stand up and reach for a glass.

elnure Wooden Platform Bed Frame, King, 150 x 200cm

A simple timber frame with space beneath

This elnure platform frame keeps the bed light on its feet, with natural wood tones, straight rails and an open space below. The selected King version is for a 150 x 200cm mattress and is listed at 30cm high, with 21.5cm of underbed clearance. It combines engineered-wood side rails with solid-wood legs and slats. Forest green and a little burgundy give the pared-back frame depth. Mattress, bedding, lamps and bedside furniture in the styling image are separate.

Auxmir Rechargeable RGB Bedside Lamp

Bedside lighting

This compact rechargeable bedside lamp appeals for its simple shape and small footprint: there is still room beside it for a book and a glass of water. We’d pair it with a timber bedside table and textured linen, keeping the arrangement relaxed rather than crowded.
