The small room with big ideas

Published

Compact Dutch city apartment · Child’s bedroom

A storage bed only saves space if you can open its drawers. This small Dutch bedroom keeps the middle clear for that daily inconvenience, with a narrow chest and wall-hung book pockets doing the rest. Cobalt gives the sleeping wall a definite place in the room.

THE DESIGN

The white bed runs along one wall, with two drawers beneath it. A tallboy fits six more into a narrow footprint. Clothes and bedding have somewhere to go, but their opening paths must be included when measuring the remaining floor.

An ash wall module carries a peach book pocket and a separate fabric storage bag. A wall lamp saves the need for another bedside surface. Cane, painted floorboards and a small woven rug provide detail around the blue wall. Check the bed's mattress guidance and appropriate wall fixings before adapting the layout.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Count the space furniture needs when it is open.

Colour palette

  • Cobalt
  • Warm white
  • Pale timber
  • Rust
  • Peach
  • Olive
01

The furniture respects the footprint

A proper single bed gives the room its starting point. The 65 cm-wide tallboy adds six drawers while keeping its depth to 40 cm. The remaining floor serves movement and play.

02

One colour supplies the identity

The cobalt wall does enough on its own. White bed rails, warm timber and a rust textile keep the other decisions simple, letting the room feel confident without becoming busy.

03

Storage is planned at different levels

Two drawers beneath the bed hold bulkier things; the tallboy handles folded clothes. The wall organiser keeps books and smaller possessions visible and close to hand.

04

The walls do useful work

One compact four-rung module carries two different fabric accessories. A wall lamp also saves a surface, leaving the room free of an extra bedside cabinet.

05

There is room for personality

A small drawing and familiar objects make the bedroom its occupant’s own. The rug and cotton throw provide enough softness without filling the clear floor with cushions and baskets.

WHAT TO BORROW

Measure the bed drawers fully open, then the route to the chest. Use the wall for the smaller storage that would otherwise occupy that remaining floor.
