ROOM 21 · Children's Room

The shared room with breathing space

Published

1930s / post-war suburban family home · Shared bedroom

Sharing a bedroom is easier when reaching your clothes doesn't involve somebody else's bed. Two upholstered singles leave the middle clear, with shared drawers and books accessible to both. Bedding and drawings can make each side personal once those routes work.

THE DESIGN

The two full-length beds give the children equal sleeping space. Blue connects the walls, while their bedding and smaller possessions can differ. Clear floor between the beds remains useful for dressing and games.

A broad chest handles shared clothes. Beside it, mint and peach canvas pockets hang at separate heights from an ash wall bar; these are fabric pockets, not wooden shelves. Books stay visible without another chest on the floor. Small headboard lights serve each bed separately.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Both children need an easy route to the shared things.

Colour palette

  • Sky blue
  • Warm white
  • Pale oak
  • Tomato
  • Mustard
  • Mint
01

Equal does not mean identical

Matching beds give both children the same starting point. Different textiles and small displays let each sleeping area develop a personality without competing for space.

02

The layout does the hard work

The beds sit around the room’s edges, keeping their approaches clear. Shared furniture has its own place, so reaching a drawer or a book does not mean crossing the other child’s bed.

03

Colour connects the separate areas

Sky blue runs between the two sleeping areas. The smaller tomato and rust textiles can belong to each child's side without drawing a hard dividing line across the room.

04

Storage is useful and visible

A proper chest handles clothes, while two coloured canvas pockets keep favourite books within the shared storage area. Each has a clear job, rather than becoming another surface to fill.

05

Softness keeps it a bedroom

Upholstered bed frames and knitted throws make each sleeping area comfortable to settle into. Headboard lights give each bed its own evening light without floor lamps in the shared route.

WHAT TO BORROW

Check both children’s routes to the shared drawers and books. Each should be able to reach them without climbing across the other’s bed; personal colour can follow once that works.
