The white room held by one picture

Published

A architect-designed coastal house, conceived for East Sussex.

A white room can have plenty of tension. In this coastal design, one substantial print, clear furniture profiles and the changing view are allowed to do most of the work.

THE DESIGN

The picture is given an uninterrupted wall and room around its frame. At 100 by 140cm, the selected print needs a substantial clear area around its frame. The sofa sits low beneath the architectural lines of the glazing.

White linen upholstery and grey leather keep the seating distinct without adding another strong colour field. The black-framed sling chair lets the floor remain visible, and the marble side table supplies a useful surface with a compact footprint. White makes these outlines unusually important.

The blue graphic composition supplies the strongest colour on the white wall. Outside, the coastal light changes on its own terms. A few objects are enough; the room would lose its concentration if every empty surface were treated as unfinished.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

One picture can carry the tension if the room gives it space.

Colour palette

  • Bright white
  • Pale maple
  • Off-black
  • Artwork-led colour
01

Give the picture a whole wall

The selected print is 100 by 140cm. Clear wall around its frame lets that size register from the seating group.

02

White makes the edges matter

Glazing, joints and furniture profiles become the detail in a restrained room.

03

A light chair breaks the block

The sling chair keeps the floor visible beside the sofa.

04

Leave the coast unstyled

The view through the glazing provides movement; extra decorative objects would only compete.

WHAT TO BORROW

Mark the artwork's actual size on the wall before deciding what belongs beside it. A large clear margin can make a picture more effective than several additional objects.
