ROOM 148 · Bathroom

A good bathroom for whoever is staying

Published

A detached Tudor Revival house, conceived for St. Louis suburbs, MO.

A guest brings a wash bag, a preferred way of doing things and very little knowledge of the cupboards. This bathroom leaves room for all three. The counter stays clear, fresh linen has a proper home and the bath can double as a shower. Plum-brown paneling gives the pale fittings an outline; the oak-grain cabinet keeps the room from feeling borrowed.

THE DESIGN

The tub-shower makes one room useful to visitors with different preferences. It also leaves the dry part simple: a cabinet, a mirror and somewhere for linen. The guest’s own wash bag is allowed to be the most noticeable object on the counter.

Plum-brown paneling gives white fittings an outline without darkening every surface. The oak-grain cabinet puts storage beneath the basin. A fine gold frame outlines the mirror without using any of the counter a guest needs.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A full-size bathing room works for visiting children and adults without looking temporary.
