ROOM 166 · Bathroom

One bathroom, different routines

Published

A large remodeled ranch house, conceived for Sacramento, CA.

The family can share a bathroom without sharing every moment of it. Bathing happens behind a door; toothbrushing and the search for a clean towel can carry on outside. A longer counter gives the small daily objects somewhere to land. Mint and blue make the arrangement feel cheerful without asking it to be precious.

THE DESIGN

The solid door is the most useful feature in the room. It lets bathing continue while someone else uses the counter, and it gives different ages a little independence within one shared bathroom. The open dry floor does not have to become a waiting area.

Navy gives the long cabinet weight beneath the broad black-framed mirror. Mint keeps the walls fresh, and fine terrazzo brings a small scale to the floor without an emphatic pattern. Drawers, hooks and a linen cabinet give ordinary belongings actual places to go.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A long counter and a separate bathing compartment let a shared bathroom accommodate more than one routine.

Colour palette

  • Mint
  • Navy
  • White terrazzo
  • Blond wood
01

Separate privacy

A solid pocket door divides bathing from the counter.

02

More landing space

The long vanity accommodates daily objects between the basins.

03

Small pattern underfoot

Fine terrazzo chips vary the pale floor without obscuring the room's edges. Choose the actual floor for its wet-area suitability and care requirements as well as its appearance.

04

Places for belongings

Hooks and closed storage reduce the work asked of the counter.

WHAT TO BORROW

Design for overlapping routines rather than an empty bathroom at its tidiest.
