Daylight above the green tub

Published

A large custom desert house, conceived for Scottsdale, AZ.

A high window leaves the wall below available for the green tub. Two basins take the working side, with enough open floor between them for one person to pass another.

THE DESIGN

High glazing changes the terms of the view. Daylight reaches the room above the tub. The high position avoids the usual low-level view, though outside sightlines still need checking before deciding whether a blind is required. The bath has a clear position beyond the working side rather than in the main route.

A pale woodgrain double vanity keeps storage together. Two oval mirrors interrupt its long horizontal line, while the separate shower and toilet occupy their own boundaries. The center is useful precisely because it has not been filled.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

The clerestory brings daylight above the tub while leaving the working wall separate.

Colour palette

  • Sand plaster
  • Pale stone
  • Black
  • Avocado
01

Light above eye level

The clerestory leaves the lower wall available for bathing. Its privacy depends on the actual surroundings and should be checked from outside.

02

Color in one fitting

The avocado tub gives the pale room a focus.

03

Two softer outlines

Oval mirrors break up the long cabinet.

04

An open center

Clear floor connects the separate routines.

WHAT TO BORROW

Consider where daylight can enter without also admitting a direct view.
