From dressing room to bathroom

Published

A traditional suburban detached house, conceived for Princeton, NJ.

The morning routine begins before anyone reaches the bath. Dressing storage stays on the other side of the doorway, leaving a long vanity wall for the things that belong at the sink. Two mirrors give that wall a useful rhythm. Farther in, the tub and shower have their own quieter end. The floor between them is deliberately uneventful: somewhere to pass, dry off and get on with the day.

THE DESIGN

The double vanity makes the working wall explicit: two basins, two mirrors and drawers underneath. Its fine gold frame gives white cabinetry an outline against the pale shell. The color is in the metal and the reflected daylight, rather than a collection of decorative bottles.

The oval tub occupies its own part of the room, with the shower separately enclosed. Keeping dressing storage outside the main bathing area reduces the number of competing doors and surfaces. The generous floor is there for passing and drying off, not for another stool.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A wide shared vanity and a separate wet end turn a morning queue into two parallel routines.
