A sideways view

ROOM 164 · Bathroom
A contemporary hillside house, conceived for Marin County, CA.
The garden runs beside the room rather than waiting at its far end. A white tub turns toward that sideways view; the basins stay together on the opposite wall. Screening does the unglamorous work that makes the openness possible. The result feels connected to the trees without asking the rest of the house to look in.

The tub runs beside the glazing, leaving the middle available for movement. A screen outside is intended to limit lower sightlines while retaining the trees. Its height and coverage need checking against the actual views into the room. Privacy is part of the design, rather than a blind remembered after the picture window has been installed.
Across the room, the white fluted cabinet gives the basins a compact working wall. Two backlit mirrors can take over as daylight fades, and the fine gold frame provides an outline against green and white. The garden supplies most of the ornament.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
The tub sits beside the garden rather than at the end of the aisle.
The screen is part of the view's design. Check sightlines from the garden and neighbouring windows before relying on its position.
Basins, storage and mirrors stay together.
Green, white and pale timber leave attention for the trees.
WHAT TO BORROW
Resolve privacy at the same time as the view, not afterward.

The white fluted cabinet keeps the working side bright beside the trees. Two basins and separate drawers give the morning routine a place, while the fine gold frame stops the pale fittings disappearing into the wall.

Two simple backlit mirrors keep each basin useful after daylight fades. Their rectangular edges belong to the compact working wall; the garden supplies the less orderly shapes.

The plain white tub sits lengthwise beside the garden instead of claiming the center of the room. Its quiet oval leaves the trees in charge of the view and gives the passage a clear edge.
