ROOM 165 · Bathroom

The guest bath under the rooflight

Published

A contemporary infill house, conceived for Portland, OR.

The daylight arrives from the roof because there is no useful side outlook to borrow. A deep white shaft carries it down into the middle of the room. Below, the shower gets the far end and the small cabinet gets a violet wall. Nothing pretends the neighboring house has vanished.

THE DESIGN

The deep rooflight shaft brings daylight into the middle of an otherwise internal room. That is the principal architectural move. The shower takes the deeper end, while a small cabinet and mirror keep the approach useful.

Soft violet gives cool light a gentler surface without turning everything warm. Woodgrain draws attention to the basin, and hooks put towels where a guest can see them. At night, the backlit mirror supplies a local source of light rather than asking the ceiling to do every job.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Light from above makes a complete bathroom possible without pretending there is a window through the neighboring house.

Colour palette

  • Soft violet
  • Warm gray
  • Pale oak
  • White
01

Daylight from above

A deep shaft makes the missing side outlook irrelevant.

02

A full shower

The far end is given to one complete bathing space.

03

Storage at the basin

Drawers and small side shelves keep necessities close.

04

A gentle wall color

Violet changes the light without overpowering it.

WHAT TO BORROW

Consider a rooflight where a side window cannot provide a useful outlook. Check the structure and route through the roof before planning the fittings below it.
