ROOM 146 · Bathroom

The bathroom with two timetables

Published

A detached postwar family house, conceived for Grand Rapids, MI.

Somebody always needs the sink before somebody else has finished. This bathroom gives the routines separate doors. Two basins sit in the bright front room; the shower and toilet have a compartment of their own. Blue tile supplies the character, while a pair of yellow towels is enough to make the room feel cheerful before the school run.

THE DESIGN

The important division is between routines. A solid pocket door separates the wet compartment from the basin room, so the mirror need not wait for the shower. Two basins help, but the door does the more consequential work.

Blue tile gives the room a continuous background for the white fluted cabinet. Gold framing provides a little definition, and yellow towels add the smallest cheerful interruption. The counter stays available for the daily things that cannot sensibly be styled away.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A separated toilet-and-shower zone lets one person brush their teeth while another finishes bathing.
