ROOM 141 · Bathroom

A guest bath that explains itself

Published

A coastal shingle house, conceived for Kennebunk, ME.

A visitor should not need a tour of the bathroom. Here the towel is easy to find, the counter has room for a wash bag and the shower sits plainly to one side. Green boards give the room a little of the coastal house’s character without borrowing a single nautical prop. The brown cabinet puts a drawer directly below the daily routine.

THE DESIGN

Green paneling gives the dry wall the character of a room in a house. The shower is more straightforward: pale surfaces, clear glass and black fittings that can be understood at a glance. The change in treatment makes the two uses legible.

The floating woodgrain cabinet takes toiletries off the basin edge and leaves the floor visible below. An oval mirror eases the succession of straight boards and glass edges. A towel placed in plain sight is a more generous gesture than a shelf full of unfamiliar products.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Visible towels, a useful shelf and a straightforward shower make hospitality practical.

Colour palette

  • Sea-glass green
  • Chalk
  • Brown oak
  • Charcoal
01

An obvious sequence

Basin, towel and shower are easy to find.

02

Storage below the sink

A drawer gives spare supplies a place without occupying the counter a guest needs. The brown front stays distinct against the green paneling.

03

A softer outline

The oval mirror loosens the rectangular enclosure.

04

Keep the floor visible

A floating cabinet avoids a solid block at the entry.

WHAT TO BORROW

Make the room understandable to someone who has never used it before.
