A lower ceiling, a longer afternoon

Published

A arts and crafts house, conceived for Hertfordshire.

This is the garden room for a day when the weather turns. Dark beams sit close overhead, a lamp pools light beside the sofa, and the windows offer a long view of the borders from a comfortable height. The pale upholstery keeps things easy; chocolate leather gives the room its richer note.

THE DESIGN

The low bookcase fits beneath a loose arrangement of bird prints. Together they give the wall behind the sofa enough detail to reward a second look, without competing with the windows.

Two ribbed leather chairs face into the group on open brass frames. A worn timber table and flatwoven rug sit comfortably with them. Keeping the passage beside the glazing open means the garden remains part of the room even when everyone is settled.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A low ceiling, full bookcase and warm leather make a garden room comfortable well into the evening.

01

A ceiling with weight

Dark timber beams make the low room feel settled and sheltered.

02

Pale seats, richer chairs

Stone-coloured linen balances the darker leather and book spines.

03

Art above the shelves

Bird prints occupy the wall at a scale suited to the low ceiling.

04

An evening light

The table lamp serves the sofa without lighting the whole room from overhead.

WHAT TO BORROW

Furnish a low garden room for the hours after the sun has moved on.
