A table under the rooflight

Published

A stone country house, conceived for Somerset.

The marble table catches the best of the light. Its pale surface sits below the roof lantern, with cane-backed chairs drawn close and a checked bench along the stone wall. Butter-yellow cupboards keep the kitchen gentle; the ink-blue island gives all that pale material a firmer centre.

THE DESIGN

The old limestone wall is left rough, which makes the smooth marble and painted doors more satisfying beside it. Oak beams carry that warmth overhead, while the rooflight keeps the deeper part of the room bright.

A round table is a useful companion to a rectangular island. Their shapes give cooking and sitting slightly different territories. The bench offers another place to read, with no additional armchair to negotiate on the way through.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A round table beneath the rooflight gives the kitchen an inviting place to pause.

01

A round dining place

The circular table softens the runs of kitchen cabinetry.

02

An island in ink

Dark paint gives the pale kitchen a clear centre of weight.

03

Rough beside smooth

Stone wall and marble top make each other's texture more apparent.

04

A useful wall edge

The checked bench supplies an extra seat without filling the middle.

WHAT TO BORROW

Pair a rectangular island with a round table when the two need distinct identities.
