ROOM 177 · Kitchen

The kitchen opens its doors

Published

A victorian brick villa, conceived for Warwickshire.

The chair by the glass changes the way this kitchen feels. Someone can sit with a book while supper is prepared, without taking an island stool or clearing a place at the table. Green cupboards, old brick and a dark red pantry door give the room enough character to carry that quieter use.

THE DESIGN

The working kitchen stays against the old masonry, where framed pictures and a short shelf soften the run of cupboards. A roof lantern brings light into the middle of the addition, beyond the reach of the garden windows alone.

The table and island have their own tasks. Cane-backed dining chairs keep the larger group light, while the cream armchair has a small rug and lamp to mark its separate place. It feels like a seat chosen for staying a while.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A reading chair gives this kitchen a reason to be occupied between meals.

Light in the middle
