A table with staying power
The long timber surface can accommodate several activities at once.

ROOM 179 · Kitchen
A farmhouse, conceived for Lenox, PA.
The table is the first thing you notice, and the place this room gives most generously to. Eight woven chairs sit around weathered timber, with the kitchen within easy reach behind. A red island and old beams supply the stronger notes; the garden windows bring enough light for the room to carry them.

The dining group has a broad strip of floor beside it, so arriving from the garden doesn't mean threading through chair backs. Near the windows, one small lounge chair offers a place to keep the cook company.
The kitchen's pale cupboards allow the island to hold the color. A few open shelves, useful bowls and books keep the old-house setting informal, while the full table can take supper, homework or a newspaper spread.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
The long timber surface can accommodate several activities at once.
A painted island concentrates the colour below the brighter walls.
The reading chair offers an alternative to the dining group.
Clear floor beside the table keeps the garden entrance usable.
WHAT TO BORROW
Give the everyday table enough room for the things that happen before and after dinner.
