An illustrated concept for Dutch canal-house reading room.

A blue sofa faces bookshelves and a television in this Dutch canal-house concept. Small nesting tables keep the middle flexible, while a large ochre abstract lifts the wall above the seating.

Reading can turn into an episode without moving to another room. The television sits within the left-hand shelving, directly across from the blue sofa, with books above and closed storage below. Two small tables overlap in the middle, leaving more of the patterned rug visible than one solid coffee table would. The canal view supplies plenty of activity at the far end. On the quieter wall, an ochre abstract repeats the small golden cushion and gives the long sofa a companion at a much larger scale.

Make the shelves take the screen

The television shares a dark recess with the small lamp, so the bookcase can accommodate both everyday uses. Closed cupboards below provide a place for things that do not need to join the books on display.

Different sizes, one centre

The two round tables have different heights and finishes, with thin black frames below. Their overlapping tops gather the book and cup into a compact spot, leaving the doorway side of the room open.

What to borrow

In a narrow sitting room, plan the sofa and screen together before filling the remaining walls. Keep the middle useful with small movable tables, and use the wall above the sofa for artwork that can be seen from the entrance.

The architecture is an imagined European setting; linked product references are sourced for UK readers. Delivery to this setting has not been verified.
